Cape May Point - Wednesday, June 30, 2010

Location: Cape Island--Cape May Pt.

Observation date: 6/30/10
Number of species: 59

Rain overnight and a decidedly cool start to the morning probably kept some people away, but our group enjoyed plenty of good bird sightings this morning. Top prize went to the totally unexpected Red-breasted Nuthatch in pines at the back of the park, but other highlights included a fly-by Black-billed Cuckoo and great views of singing Indigo Bunting, Blue Grosbeak, Yellow-breasted Chat and a Cedar Waxwing on its nest. Also notable was the never-ending procession of Swamp Darner dragonflies, all coming in off the bay and heading north-east - though many didn't make it past the reception party of Purple Martins and Laughing Gulls!

Back Bay Birding by Boat on the Osprey - Monday, June 28 2010

Dave Lord reports:

"Back Bay Birding by Boat proved exciting, not with rare birds, but just by observing the behavior of common breeding birds. Nine Osprey chicks were counted, most feeding on the excellent prey their parents brought home. Everyone enjoyed the Egrets, even without their breeding finery, and the eye-catching Oystercatchers were just as noisome as ever. The highlight of the trip was the basic plumage Common Loon that was popping up sporadically in the main channel, a lifer for many participants."

CMBO Breeding Birds at the Rea Farm - The Beanery. Lots of Indigo Buntings and a pair of Blue Grosbeaks were seen this morning although the male Blue Grosbeak was only a brief look. The female was carrying a grasshopper maybe indicating a nest with young nearby. Green Herons were in several areas, and a cooperative Red-tailed Hawk gave us good scope views. One of the Great Crested Flycatchers we saw was a newly fledged bird.

CMBO Evening Walk at "The Meadows" - TNC. The "parking lot Indigo Bunting" showed up on the wire to greet us at the start of the walk as it has for many weeks, but definitely not expected was the sight of a male Common Yellowthroat attending to three almost full-grown Brown-headed Cowbirds! Otherwise American Oystercatcher and Piping Plover chicks were nice to see on the beach. Finally in the woods far east of the east path we found a perched Great Horned Owl which provided good scope views.

Cape May Point - Wednesday, June 23, 2010

Once again, a warm and pleasant morning at the point, with breeding activity being the order of the day. At least three pairs of Orchard Orioles are on site this year and we watched a Cedar Waxwing on its nest, a territorial Eastern Wood Pewee and had fabulous views of singing Yellow-breasted Chat, Indigo Bunting and Blue Grosbeak. Surprise of the morning was a Sharp-shinned Hawk near the Hawkwatch Platform, which panicked the Purple Martins.

Back Bay Birding by Boat on the Osprey - Monday, June 21 2010

Dave Lord reports:

"Monday's Back Bay Birding by Boat Trip did not fail to entertain participants. Many Black Skimmers were seen near the Doxsee/Snow Clam Processing plant in the harbor, and others were out feeding at various points in the Back Bays. A beautiful adult Little Blue Heron was seen feeding, giving great photo oppurtunities, and our American Oystercatchers worked their magic yet again. The highlight of the trip would have to be the Clapper Rail that ran out for a brief glimpse at Deep Creek."

Cape May Point - Wednesday, June 9, 2010

Despite a forecast of rain, the weather held dry and the birds performed wonderfully at Cape May Point State Park this morning. Stars of the show were the wonderful Yellow-breasted Chat, Orchard Oriole, Indigo Bunting and Blue Grosbeak, all of which sat out in full view for us and sang their heads off. A close Great crested Flycatcher drew a lot of admirers and we also got up close and personal with Eastern Wood Pewee and several Cedar Waxwings.

Back Bay Birding by Boat on the Osprey - Monday, June 7 2010

Dave Lord reports:

Monday Morning's Back Bay Birding by Boat proved how interesting watching breeding birds can be. We enjoyed three Tri-Colored Herons flying around various locations around the marsh, our local Black-crowned Night-herons have emerged from hiding, and two Black Skimmers put in an appearance near Thorofare Island. Our favorite Clapper Rail spot also came through with a bird appearing as soon as it was done being described. All around a great day to be on the water."

Breeding Birds At The Beanery - Saturday, June 5th 2010

CMBO's Breeding Birds at the Rea Farm Walk saw a good assortment of birds this morning. We found the "Blues Boys", Blue Grosbeak briefly and Indigo Bunting. Multiple sightings of Yellow-billed Cuckoo were enjoyed by all.

Interesting were a single, then two fly-over Cattle Egrets. Two Prothonotary Warblers were seen in the area of the Railroad Tracks in the back and the adjacent willow pond. An adult singing male Orchard Oriole was easily scoped and near by a 1st-year male and a female were also seen.

Evening at the Meadows - Friday, June 4th 2010

CMBO Evening walk at the South Cape May Meadows- TNC. A nice walk with a little of this and that in the way of Shorebirds. Most interesting were the two adult American Oystercatchers with three chicks. The chicks finally snuggled up under the female and almost disappeared! Also good looks at terns, but just as we found the Roseate Tern in the scope, they all took flight and left the area.

Cape May Point - Wednesday, June 2, 2010

Karl Lukens et. al. report:

"CMBO Birding Cape May Point Walk. An interesting birding day with a fly over of 3 Snowy Egrets and 2 Tricolored Herons. Nice looks at a Yellow-billed Cuckoo, an Eastern Kingbird on nest, and perched up Blue Grosbeak, Yellow-breasted Chat, and Orchard Oriole. On the down side we watched a Fish Crow get dive bombed while it stole/ate eggs from a Least Tern nest. "

Meadows Walk - Monday, May 31 2010

CMBO Walk with Pete Dunne at the South Cape May Meadows - TNC. We were greeted at the parking lot at the beginning and at the end of the walk by a happily singing Indigo Bunting. Unusual finds included single Black and Surf Scoters not far off shore. The hit of the walk however, was the pair of American Oystercatchers and their 3 chicks ...aaaaah!
