Birding Cape May Point - Saturday, July 31 2010

Karl Lukens reports: "CMBO Birding Cape May Point Walk. Lots of shorebirds and waders as well as passerines. Nice looks at side by side Little Blue Heron and Snowy Egret and Great Egret trying to swallow a large Sunfish. Most of the expected sandpipers were also present many for close looks. The woods produced Yellow-billed cuckoo, Indigo Bunting, Cedar Waxwings, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, and numerous young Orchard Orioles. A Bank Swallow was seen from the Hawk Watch as we finished. The Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks could only be seen on Lighthouse Pond from Lighthouse Ave. or the exit Rd. Pavilion at the end of the walk. - Karl (Kathy, Roger, Mike H., Tom)"

Cape May Point - Saturday, July 24, 2010

CMBO Birding Cape May Point Walk. The varied habitats at Cape May Point State Park generally make for good birding. This morning was no exception. Bunker Pond was loaded with waders, 37 Great Egrets, a Little Blue (imm.), a Snowy Egret, Glossy Ibis, Green Heron on the Plover Pond and many shorebirds. Three calling Royal Terns was also a treat.

In the wooded area we found a young female Pine Warbler and a bright Yellow-throated Warbler - an obvious migrant. Although we did miss the Yellow-breasted Chat and Blue Grosbeak (they have been quiet lately), we finished the walk with three Wood Ducks and three up close Black-bellied Whistling-ducks at the blind on Lighthouse Pond.

Cape May Point - Wednesday, July 21, 2010

What a great walk we had this morning, as Bunker Pond becomes the focus of attention with birds changing daily there. This morning we found an abundance of herons and egrets to study and plenty of time to scan through and find a juvenile Little Blue Heron amongst a flying group of Snowy Egrets. Snowies can be confusing this time of year as young birds have such an array of different color bare parts - we found one with a yellow bill! Most also have greenish legs too, so telling them from Little Blues can be tricky without care.

A single Pectoral Sandpiper lurked on one of the back ponds, a Spotted Sandpiper was still - well, spotty, and a Piping Plover still had two chicks in tow - though growing rapidly. Good numbers of Bottlenose Dolphins fed offshore and there were signs that warbler migration is but a quick gasp of admiration away as we totalled at least 12 Yellow Warblers passing overhead and uttering typical migration flight calls.

Back Bay Birding By Boat - Tuesday, July 20, 2010

Dave Lord writes: "Back Bay Birding by Boat on the 19th was a good foretaste of things to come. Migrant shorebirds were not hard to come by, with many Short-billed Dowitchers, and Least and Spotted Sandpipers hanging about. We had a juvenile Yellow-crowned Night Heron, as well as a reliable Black-crowned Night Heron in his usual spot in Jarvis Sound. The Common Tern chicks are taking flight, while many of the Laughing Gull and Osprey chicks are still doubtful in their flying ability."

Cape May Point - Saturday, July 17, 2010

CMBO Birding Cape May Point. A good variety of Shorebirds, waders and passerines were enjoyed by all on this morning's walk at Cape May Point State Park.

An immature Little Blue Heron and a close Green Heron were not the usual suspects. The "Blues Brothers" Indigo Bunting and Blue Grosbeak were perched up and singing. A young Common Tern fledgling was on Bunker Pond. Several Familiar Bluet Damselflies were new to most people.

Cape May Point - Wednesday, July 14, 2010

Fall continues to head our way as we found little mixed parties of this year's youngsters feeding through the tree tops - House Wrens, Pine Warblers, Carolina Chickadees, Tufted Titmice and a Downy Woodpecker all in the mix. Visible migration included at least six Ruby-throated Hummingbirds flshaing overhead and a party of three Blue-gray Gnatcatchers heading east. Single adult Black-crowned Night Heron and juvenile Green Heron added to the variety. As for local birds - Black Skimmers ferried fish over toward the beach so it may be that chicks have hatched there. The regular Yellow-breasted Chat gave stunning views yet again and a family of young Orchard Orioles mooched around the Trumpet Creeper flowers.

Cape May Point - Wednesday, July 7, 2010

A fun morning with plenty of signs of breeding activity and early fall migration. A family of recently-fledged Orchard Orioles shared a tree with a young male Blue Grosbeak and eight Wood Ducks graced Lighthouse Pond. Two Black-billed Cuckoos were chased around by cherry-eating American Robins - the cuckoos were likely after the hairy Fall Webworm caterpillars that are now fattening up on various tree leaves. At Bunker Pond, Short-billed Dowitchers, both Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs and several Least Sandpipers were present to add to two nice Solitary Sandpipers seen earlier. Glossy Ibises seemed ever-present overhead, an adult Bald Eagle cruised by in the distance and a southbound Double-crested Cormorant moved through. In addition to the birds, we notched up 16 species of dragonflies & damselflies.

Cape May Point - Saturday, July 3, 2010

Cape May Point State park is probably the most "birdy" place at this time of year with its varied habitat which include woods, fields, freshwater marsh, beach and ocean. Breeding birds include Indigo Bunting, Blue Grosbeak, Yellow-breasted Chat, House & Carolina Wrens, Orchard Oriole, Eastern Kingbird, Piping Plover, American Oystercatcher and Least Tern. We did see most of these this morning. Also a good number of Glossy Ibis flying in or over the ponds.
