Twilight Watch at the Meadows - Wednesday, September 30 2010

Warren Cairo et. al. report:

Wednesday evening's walk at the meadows began with threatening sky's and a Common Nighthawk seen from the parking lot. The west path afforded good looks at Wilson Snipe, Pectoral sandpipers and two Sora's calling right near us but remaining unseen. The low cloud cover and the setting sun limited visibility but we were able to locate a number of immature Black-crowned Night herons before ending the walk. The rain held off but the mosquito's were plentiful. All in all a pleasant walk.

Back Bay Birding by Boat - Sunday, September 26 2010

Dave Lord reports:

Sunday's Back Bay Birding by Boat trip aboard the Osprey really hinted strongly that Fall is coming. We enjoyed a roost of about 50 American Oystercatchers along Cold Spring Inlet's jetty, while a beautiful male Black Scoter bobbed in the background. A Peregrine Falcon gave us a bit of a show in the harbor as well. Even more impressive was the heron show around Turtle creek, with three Tri-colored Herons and a dozen immature Yellow-crowned Night-herons."

Cape May Point - Wednesday, September 22, 2010

A gusty southerly wind ruled out overnight migration, but our walk participants still enjoyed some great birding, which included an early and unexpected juvenile Dunlin on Bunker Pond and a fabulously obliging Sora Rail. Monarchs - as ever! - stole the show for sheer exuberance though!

South Cape May Meadows - Monday, September 20th, 2010

Adult Lesser Black-backed Gull amonst a nice mix of Great Black-backed, American Herring, Laughing and Ring-billed Gulls. Still no-one can tell me why gulls stare at the ground around their feet so much! [Photo by Mike Crewe]

Nice variety of birds this morning with numerous raptors, waders, and ducks. Highlights were an adult Lesser Black-backed Gull and a fly-over Hudsonian Godwit and four distant Brown Pelicans. We also had a leader and a few others hear a Sora and a nice sighting of a "green Budgie" on the wires with Starlings!!

Cape May Point State Park - Wednesday, September 15, 2010

The most awesome Wednesday walk so far this year peaked with outrageously good views of a young Wood Stork circling right over Cape May's famous lighthouse - alongside an adult Bald Eagle!! But the walk had been great all round, with migrants a-plenty overhead right from the start, oodles of Palm Warblers in the dunes and a nice array of ducks on the ponds, including our now legendary Black-bellied Whistling-ducks.

CMBO Fall Migrants at the Rea Farm walk - The Beanery. Although only eight species of warblers were found, there were good numbers and were enjoyed by all. The highlight was an Olive-sided Flycatcher at the top of a dead snag early in the walk and found later on another similar snag, probably the same bird.

South Cape May Meadows - Friday, September 10th, 2010

CMBO Sunset Birding at the Meadows -TNC. Another good evening birding walk at the Meadows. Shorebirds were the stars of the show with a Wilson's Phalarope playing hide-and-seek in the Saltmarsh Fleabane and an American Golden Plover on the beach (and another, or same bird, later east of the east path on the far mud flats). And for a bonus, a White-winged Dove gave us a look as it flew over the meadows!

Cape May Point - Wednesday, September 08, 2010

A breezy walk with a gusty SW wind blowing which kept songbird numbers down. However, the beach provided much to look at, including two fly-by Brown Pelicans and two Sandwich Terns roosting on the beach. With summer drawing to a close, ducks are returning to the ponds and we had plenty of opportunity for close study of all the ducks we saw. The Four Black-bellied Whistling-ducks on Lighthouse Pond gave us a nice finale.

Stone Harbor Point - Tuesday, September 7 2010

Dave Lord et. al. report: "Gusty gales greeted those attending Tuesday night's Stone Harbor Point walk, as did a number of interesting finds. The pond at Stone Harbor Point held an immature Little Blue Heron, a wonderful view of a juvenile Piping Plover, and a close Western Sandpiper for good impressions. Nummy's Island contained 3 Marbled Godwits, and some really stunning (almost) breeding plumaged Red Knots wowed the crowd. We finished with a night-heron show near the free bridge, including one adult Yellow-crowned. (Warren Cairo, Jim Armstrong, Dave Lord.)"

Birding-EZ at Cape May Point State Park - Tuesday, September 7 2010

Chuck and MJ Slugg report:
Location: Cape May Point SP
Observation date: 9/7/10
Notes: The first EZ Birding walk was a leisurely stroll on the red trail of
the State Park and a survey of beach and ocean from the top of the dune. The
slow pace and lack of pressure to hike the trail around the whole park and dune
trails gave us time to study the birds and wait in one place to see what would
show up. It turned out to be a relaxing and rewarding walk.

Somer's Point Boat Trip - Thursday, August 26 2010

"Another lovely evening with somewhat calm breezes and a really good night of birding aboard the Duke O' Fluke. The herons and skimmers did not dissapoint and there were a few unexpected surprises in store. A great one was the four Marbled Godwits that flew by, not too close, but satisfying none the less. The biggest surprise of all would have to be the Common Nighthawk that flew over Ocean City!! We ended the night with a beautiful look at a Peregrine." Cape May Point - Wednesday, September 01, 2010

A great walk this morning with Bobolinks simply pouring overhead and probably well underestimated in number. One or two warblers lurked in the Bayberry bushes along the back of the dune and a nice little flock of canopy-feeders entertained us in some tall Sassafras trees. Six American Kestrels hunted dragonflies over Lighthouse Pond and three Buff-breasted Sandpipers were on the beach. Monarchs were heading south in good numbers.
