EZ Birding at Two Mile Beach Unit of the Cape May National Wildlife Refuge was filled with a variety of species today. On the beach we had good looks at Sanderlings, Dunlin, Semipalmated and Black-bellied Plover, and Ruddy Turnstones. Off shore we had some Northern Gannet, Royal Terns, and Common Loons. Lots of Double-crested Cormorants were migrating. From the duck blind we saw both Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs and Black Ducks. Many Osprey are still fishing the salt pan. Our last Saturday Photo Walk for the season was greeted with sunny mild weather. The main interest of the day was waterfowl which have been arriving in Cape May for the past week or two. American Wigeon are here in good numbers while Green-winged Teal and Ring-necked Ducks are increasing in numbers. Also present, as they almost always are, were Canada Geese and Mute Swans. All in all, it was a good last walk for the season.

Fall Migrants at the Rea Farm - Saturday, October 20th, 2012
Pockets of birds were here and there around the trail. Yellow-rumps were predominant, but Palm Warblers and both Kinglets were interspersed. Other warblers were 1 Nashville and 1 Black-throated Green. Several groups of Purple Finches were found in tree tops. Five Black-crowned Night-Herons were in the Willow Ponds. The large group had to be split in two. Group 1's list is below. Group 2 reported similar birds with the addition of Cattle Egret. Due to the rain we adjourned to the porch of the Sunset Grill for some "sea" watching. Nice variety of gulls and terns in various plumages. Off shore were a few Northern Gannets, Surf and Black Scoter, and 2 Parasitic Jeagers. Around the Magnesite Plant were both Vultures, 2 Merlin and 3 American Kestrel. Sanderling and Ruddy Turnstones were on the beach and jetty. Leaders: Mike Crewe, Karl Lukens, Warren Cairo, Roger Horn, Catherine Busch, and Chris Marks.

Raptors were scarce for the Hawks, Trails, and Beach Walk today but we had great looks at Red-breasted Nuthatches, Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, and both Golden- and Ruby-crowned Kinglets. There was a nice variety of ducks including some Green-winged Teal that were almost in full breeding plumage. Two Wood Ducks flew over toward Bunker Pond. Good raptor flight with many Sharp-shinned and Cooper's Hawks flying about. Large numbers of Northern Flicker and Yellow-rumped Warblers also around and nice views of 2 Blue-headed Vireos. EZ Birding - Tuesday, October 9th, 2012
Thousands of swirling Tree Swallows greeted us at Two Mile Beach Unit of the Cape May National Wildlife Refuge for the EZ Birding walk this morning. Many Osprey were flying between ocean and pans carrying fish and three Bald Eagles were perched, surveying the pans. In addition there were many Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, Double-crested Cormorants, and both Great and Snowy Egrets. Leaders: Chuck & Mary Jane Slugg, Janet Crawford, and Lee Smythe.

Cox Hall Creek WMA - Sunday, October 7th, 2012
The weedy fields at Cox Hall Creek WMA were full of feeding, flitting Palm and Yellow-rumped Warblers trying to stay low in the drizzle during this morning's walk. Good numbers of White-throated, Swamp, Chipping, Field and Song Sparrows are present there now, along with many Eastern Phoebes, Gray Catbirds and Yellow-shafted Flickers. A couple of Scarlet Tanagers and Indigo Buntings added color to the morning. Raptors included Bald Eagle, Peregrine, American Kestrel, Merlin, and Cooper's and Sharp-shinned Hawks. Leaders: Kathy & Roger Horn, Janet Crawford, Cindy Bamford, Mary Jane & Chuck Slugg, and David Lord.

Hawks, Trails, and Beach Walk - Saturday, October 6th, 2012
The Raptor Show would be a better name for the Hawks, Trails, and Beach Walk this afternoon. Lighthouse Pond had 3 perched Peregrine Falcons in the same tree as well as several flying overhead. Numerous Osprey were seen throughout the walk, most carrying fish. Kestrels, Merlins, Sharp-shinned and Cooper's Hawks, and a Bald Eagle rounded out the raptors. We finished with the Clay-colored Sparrow, a young White-crowned Sparrow, and a Dark-eyed Junco at the brush pile. Leaders: Chuck & Mary Jane Slugg, Cindy Bamford, and Chris Hajduk.

Photo Walks with Mike Hannisian - Saturday, October 6th, 2012
Butterfly and dragonfly numbers were a bit down, but bird numbers were way up. Must be October in Cape May. Osprey and Northern Flickers made their presence known throughout the area. The highlight of the day was at the brush pile where we stopped to shoot the Palm and Yellow-rumped Warblers, when a House Wren popped up followed shortly thereafter by the Clay-colored Sparrow. All in all, it was a very nice day afield.
