Birding Cape May Point - Saturday, December 9th, 2017

The Point was beautiful in a blanket of fresh snow this morning. Yellow-rumped Warblers and White Throated Sparrows were everywhere and finally, the long-awaited Fox Sparrows showed up, scratching in the leafy edges, first-of-season birds for most of us. Purple Sandpipers have also arrived as regulars on the jetties and Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers were hanging out at the Circle, calling frequently. Leaders: Kathy Horn, Roger Horn, Michael McCabe

Birding Cape May Point - Saturday, December 2nd, 2017

The late-lingering Green Heron at Lily Lake and the Blue-headed Vireo at the State Park were surprises on today's walk. The Red-breasted Nuthatches, quietly 'enking' in the dune pines, were more seasonal and most welcome since they've been scarce so far this year.

Fall Migrants at the Rea Farm - Saturday, November 18th, 2017

A murmuration of hundreds of starlings kept us enthralled as we walked the back fields of the Beanery. The property has a lot of great habitat for sparrows, as evidenced by the eight species we saw throughout the walk, with the highlight being three Clay-colored Sparrows moving between the field and hedgerow and providing great, long looks. The WMA was alive with berry-feasting birds this morning. Especially vibrant among the cedars and rose hips were Cedar Waxwings, a flock of Eastern Bluebirds and a male Purple Finch. A mixed blackbird flock included three Rusty Blackbirds, always good to see, and document in eBird, because of their drastic population decline over the last 15 years. Fall Migrants at the Rea Farm - Saturday, November 11th, 2017

Though the male Wood Ducks in the pond were stunning and the Savannah Sparrows along the back hedgerow were quite handsome, they couldn't compete with the young Golden Eagle that came soaring overhead. It really was a day for large high-flying birds as there were kettles of Black and Turkey Vultures, Red-tailed and Red-shouldered Hawks and two Bald Eagles. Above Par Birding at Cox Hall Creek WMA - Sunday, November 5th, 2017

It's been a long time since we've seen so many Eastern Bluebirds at CHC WMA. Of course, these were migrants but it was great to hear and see them several times during our morning's walk. A lot of sparrows - Field, Song, Savannah, White-throated, and Swamp, along with Eastern Towhee - were feasting in the seedy habitat along with both Eastern(yellow) and Western (brown) Palm Warblers.  Leaders: Kathy Horn, Roger Horn, Deb Payson, Lynn Pollard, Dave Pollard, Karen Thompson, and Bill Boyle.

Fall Migrants at The Rea Farm - Saturday, November 4th, 2017

A Baltimore Oriole was a good start to this morning's walk but was perhaps outdone by the American White Pelican circling within a kettle of vultures at the very end. An Eastern Phoebe called frequently along a back hedgerow, undeterred by the presence of the adult Cooper's Hawk that posed for quite awhile and kept the sparrows hidden. Bluebirds and a pipit called overhead and we saw a late-lingering Osprey. Leaders: Kathy Horn, Roger Horn, Deb Payson, Karl Lukens & Barb Bassett.

E-Z Birding - Tuesday, October 17th, 2017

There was an incredible flight of hawks today making it difficult to leave the parking lot, especially when the walk started off with the Rough-legged Hawk giving us killer views as it circled overhead. This was presumably the same bird that had been trapped, banded, and released the day before. Sharp-shinned and Cooper's Hawks were frequently in view as we progressed around the park, and the variety and numbers of ducks is increasing. Leaders: Catherine Busch, Chris Marks, Lynne and Marc Breslow.

Above Par Birding at Cox Hall Creek WMA - Sunday, October 15th, 2017

With ten species of warblers and six species of sparrows, it sure seemed like fall, despite the summery temperatures. Two White-crowned Sparrows were among the many Palm Warblers and Ruby-crowned Kinglets in the brushy fields and a first-of-season Junco was seen, along with Brown Creeper and Yellow-bellied Sapsucker.

An overcast afternoon made for great sky watching, and we were rewarded with 12 active Merlins on a mission to rid the area of dragonflies! Fall Migrants at the Rea Farm - Saturday, October 14th, 2017

Beautiful in their deep gray-blue and rust even on such an overcast morning, Swamp Sparrows were everywhere at the Beanery this morning, more common even than the Yellow-rumped Warblers that constantly chipped around us. White-throated Sparrows are also back and the far hedgerow held Savannah Sparrows and a first-winter White-crowned Sparrow. Mixed warbler flocks seemed to be hanging around the wet woods areas and a female Rose-breasted Grosbeak perched briefly for some of us to view.

Above Par Birding at Cox Hall Creek - Sunday, October 1st, 2017

Sometimes, a few days after a favorable migration front that drops a lot of birds at Cape May's tip, birds settle in to feed for a few days a bit further up the bayshore, making Cox Hall Creek WMA the place to be. That seemed to be the case today, with eleven species of warblers, many kinglets and a variety of vireos. One of the Blue-headed Vireos was especially kind to us, posing in good light as we admired its fine plumage. Leaders: Kathy Horn, Roger Horn, Janet Crawford, Cindy Bamford, Deb Payson, & Joe Demko.

Fall Migrants at the Rea Farm - Saturday, September 30th, 2017

During migration, you really need eyes in the back of your head, and eyes on top of your head. On a day like today, if you took your eyes off the sky, you'd miss a falcon or an accipiter. If you took your eyes off the shrubs, you'd miss the flit of a kinglet or a warbler. These are days that make us glad we're birders!
