Birding the Meadows - Monday, June 26th, 2017

A good number of gulls and terns were overhead, mostly Laughing Gulls and Forster's Terns and a few Least Terns. Most interesting were two Gull-billed Terns that flew over the Plover Pond before heading to the State Park. Also of interest were two male Orchard Orioles and one female. Birds seen or heard by one or two people were Least Bittern and Brown Thrasher.  Leaders: Pete Dunne, Chuck Slugg, Karl Lukens, Steve Weis, Pat Perkins, Catherine Busch, Carrie Bell, & Mary Watkins.

Breeding Birds at the Rea Farm - Saturday, June 24th, 2017

Two "Golden Swamp Warblers", now called Prothonotary Warblers, were singing repeatedly this morning from within the wet woods. One graced us briefly with its presence and really did look golden in the dim light of the woods. The only Eastern warbler that nests in cavities, the Prothonotary is a regular breeder at the Rea Farm which usually hosts 3-4 pair per season. More cooperative were a couple of Blue Grosbeaks and several Indigo Buntings which sat up, singing, while we got them in the scopes. A memorable sighting was of an Osprey with a stick that looked almost too big for him to carry. Though ospreys are large raptors with a wingspan of up to 6 feet, this was a really big stick, almost a log! Leaders: Kathy Horn, Roger Horn, Deb Payson, Cindy Bamford, & Michael McCabe.

However, the amount of demised crabs was high. We were afforded a bonus in-service on water quality monitoring around the oyster beds by a Rutgers lab employee. Leader: Mary Watkins

Sunset Birding at The Meadows - Wednesday, June 7th, 2017

Tonight's Sunset at the Meadows walk was a little bit of a surprise. Who would expect that in early June in Cape May you would need a fleece for this walk, but we did. It really wasn't really cold, just a cool ocean breeze, one that we will be begging for in a few weeks. We had great looks at most of the birds along the way, Common Yellowthroats, Least Terns, and American Oystercatchers, but the highlight for many was watching the Black Skimmers skimming across a mirror-like pond which was reflecting a beautiful sunset. What a great night to be out! Leaders: Warren Cairo & Michael McCabe.

Birding the Meadows with Pete Dunne - Monday, May 22nd, 2017

A rather birding slow day, the only ducks seen were Mallard and Gadwall. On the beach we had the usual American Oystercatchers, two sitting Common Terns, and numerous Least Terns perched and flying. Shorebirds included Willet, Short-billed Dowitcher, Least and Semipalmated Sandpipers, a couple Dunlin, and Greater Yellowlegs. Swallows and Chimmey Swifts overhead. Leaders: Pete Dunne, Warren Cairo, Karl Lukens, Pat Perkins, and Janet Crawford.
