Twilight Walk at the Meadows - Wednesday, September 6th, 2017

As heavy gray clouds approached and thunder rumbled closer and closer, a Virginia Rail called along the East Path. The water in the ponds is still quite high, leaving few edges for foraging shorebirds but a Solitary Sandpiper was feeding there and a lone Blue-winged Teal huddled amongst the Mallards. Today's walk was the first of the season, and we started off with a feeding frenzy off shore - many gulls and terns diving to catch bait fish, accompanied by 5 Brown Pelicans. Our walk through the park found a number of migrant songbirds including six species of warblers. Two Blue-winged Teal were a treat as well. We were surprised by a perching Great Egret in the woods. Waterfowl consisted of Canada Geese, Mallards, and Mute Swans. Overhead, we had numerous Tree and Barn Swallows, several Chimney Swifts, and two lingering Purple Martins. Above Par Birding at Cox Hall Creek WMA - Sunday, September 3rd, 2017

Birds seemed to be moving in a frenzy of feeding after yesterday's rains. American Redstarts are still coming through in good numbers, along with a smattering of other warblers, and some of the breeders, such as Blue Grosbeak, Indigo Bunting and Great Crested Flycatcher are still around. Flocks of Cedar Waxwings and Bobolinks seemed to be taking turns alerting us to their presence by calling overhead. Above Par Birding at Cox Hall Creek WMA - Sunday, August 27th, 2017

We had a hard time covering any ground at CHC WMA because there were so many birds to look at, including lots of Ruby-throated  Hummingbirds, Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, Eastern Kingbirds  and American Redstarts. We had a few Purple Martins present, hawking insects over the fields, even though none bred in the martin "condo" at the back end of the property. Leaders: Kathy Horn, Roger Horn, Janet Crawford, Shaun Bamford, Cindy Bamford, & Sharon Meeker.

Fall Migrants at the Rea Farm - Saturday, August 26th, 2017

Large expanses of jewel weed are attracting Ruby-throated Hummingbirds at the Beanery these days, as the blossoms are just starting to open. Cedar Waxwing flocks now include streaky-breasted young birds and the Baltimore Orioles were hard to miss as they gleamed orange in the morning light.
